There are actually 2 provinces called Limburg and they are bordering each other.
One province is part of
Belgium
and the other belongs to the
Netherlands. The
dialects
spoken in these provinces sound very similar, and in some cases it is
very hard to hear from which of the provinces someone comes from.
For a large part, the borders between the two Limburg provinces fall directly
on the Maas River. On the one side of the river we have the Netherlands, on the
other side we have Belgium. In the past, these country borders have changed several times and as a consequence, many of my ancestors that were born in the Netherlands later become residents of Belgium, even though they never moved towns. There are currently several Belgian towns along the Maas River that once belonged to the Netherlands.
